All Seated at the Table: An IPE Experience of Dinner Conversations at Family Houses (2020)

Abstract: This interprofessional program was designed to provide opportunities for health sciences students at a southeastern university to engage in conversations with chronically ill patients and their families at local family houses. Students developed observation and communication skills to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of chronic illness. Teams of students were assigned to a family house, received mentoring, and submitted weekly reflections to foster conversations among the team and to develop strategies to communicate effectively with their future clients/patients. Thematic analysis of weekly reflections resulted in the following main themes: community, positive student emotions, patient-first perspective, and diversity.
